Essential Skill: Camping Water Purification

CAMPING WATER PURIFICATION IS AN ESSENTIAL SKILL THAT EVERY OUTDOORSMAN SHOULD HAVE.

The goal of this website is to share knowledge and skills in order to help people enjoy the outdoors. Our belief is that by doing so, we’ll help people find reprieve from the high-tech modern world and enjoy the peace and quiet of the natural world. Although nature is a wonderful place to enjoy and recharge our batteries, it is also necessary to have some basic outdoor skills. By default, going to wild places removes you from the support of modern life. As a result, you need to be able to take care of yourself. You can do this by developing skills and knowledge. On this website, we separate wilderness skills into the categories of shelter, fire, food, water, navigation, safety, packing, blades, and animal care. These categories are further broken down by the amount of technology you use to get the output you desire. In the case of water, the desired output is developing a camping water purification process that works.

The purpose of this article is to give people a starting place for how to purify water while camping. While most basic camping tasks do require some skills, in the case of water purification, it really comes down to having a modern tool.

CAMPING WATER PURIFICATION ESSENTIAL TOOL

The tool that I use for water purification is the Survivor Filter Pro. This small filtering system was designed with the minimalist camper in mind. It is a relatively small system that does a great job removing all kinds of undesirables from your drinking water. Not only does it remove the living organisms that can get you sick, but it also removes metals and other toxins from the water that other methods or systems may not. Another reason I like the Survivor Filter Pro is the long-term use it provides. Other methods of purification are only capable of processing a few days worth of water. This camping water purification system can filter thousands of gallons of water before needing a filter change. In this regard, it is far superior to other systems. Additionally, it is capable of filtering water in high volume. In other words, you can filter lots of water with it. In the past, I’ve used water bottles that filter water on demand. These bottles work ok, but they only process small amounts of water. With the Survivor Filter Pro, you can process gallons of water. Finally, this water purification system provides water on demand. You can pump it into your cup and drink it immediately. Other approaches, like iodine, require you to wait as long as 40 minutes before drinking.

Although a very helpful water purification system, the Survivor Filter Pro does have a downside. The biggest downside I’ve found is the fact that it can take a while to filter large volumes of water. My experience has been that it will filter less than an ounce per pump. That means if you want to filter a gallon of water you’ll need to operate the pump several hundred times. Admittedly, this can get a little tiresome, especially after a long day. Still, for me, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages of this system.

When it comes to water, you really don’t want to take any chances. For those reasons, this is my favorite tool for purifying water.
